Mercury in Cosmetics

Analytical testing dots

Mercury is a common ingredient found in skin lightening soaps and creams. It is also found in other cosmetics, such as eye makeup cleansing products and mascara. Mercury salts inhibit the formation of melanin, resulting in a lighter skin tone. Mercury-containing skin lightening products are hazardous to health and as a result have been banned in many countries.

In 2016, New Straits Times Special Probes Team went on a mission to survey the cosmetics products sold in Malaysia. Based on their report, the result was startling as some of these products can cause serious health issues. The analysis of two beauty creams found dangerous dose of mercury that can increase risk of getting chronic illnesses within FIVE years – including BRAIN DAMAGE by up to 22 times! Absorption rate of mercury can be a whopping 80% depending on skin condition!

ALS Malaysia offers mercury testing for cosmetic manufacturers and consumers. Please contact us at below for more test information. Our sales personnel will be more than delightful to explain the test details to you!
